The Centre has told the High Court of Delhi it is aware of the dangers of fake news circulating on social media platforms & rules have been framed under the Intermediaries Guidelines - which regulate social media platforms - to deal with the issue.
The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MEITY) recently told the Delhi High Court that any unlawful content on social media platforms such as Facebook, Google & Twitter, can be disabled either by Court order, a Govt notification, or by the websites' own grievance officers if they violate policies or terms of use.
The submissions by the Govt came in reply to a Public Interest Litigation by Ex-RSS idealogue K N Govindacharya seeking directions to Google, Facebook & Twitter to ensure removal of fake news & hate speech as well as public disclosure of their designated officers in India.
Govindacharya has also moved an application through Lawyer Virag Gupta, seeking removal of illegal groups, including 'bois locker room' from social media platforms.
In response, the Govt said according to the Intermediary Guidelines, grievance officers of the websites are bound to redress complaints within one month of receiving them.
