Recently, an advocate was dragged and pilled out of his house in Etah, UP, and assaulted him mercilessly. The Bar Council of India made a press release earlier today condemning the action and called for an end to such atrocities committed by the UP Police. The Chairman termed such violence as ‘worse than that of criminals’. Such action is not expected out of the protectors of law and order. The extent of atrocity committed on the advocate, the letter said, shows some kind of ulterior motive. The letter further asked the Chief Justice of India and CJ of Allahabad HC to take cognizance of the matter and ask the UP government to dismiss the officials from service since the request of the UP Bar Council has not been considered by the UP government.

The BCI stated that if the judiciary and the government do not take action against the brutality then they will have to come on the road. The letter also stated that a message has been delivered to HM Amit Shah to protect the lawyers of the country.
The letter delved upon other issues pertaining to lawyers and stated that a joint video conferencing would be convened to decide a future course of action wherein they will discuss the issue of financial assistance. They were dejected by the fact that even the apex court has not taken cognizance of the matter and that the government is acting in an unruly manner by not providing interest-free loans.
Another aspect of the letter highlighted their displeasure over the intention of the government to do away with the physical hearing and introduce virtual hearings of the court. It was stated that such a proposal would be dangerous as it would favor the big firms. Resumption of physical proceedings is the need of the hour.
Lastly, the press release rejected the proposal of the government to allow foreign law firms. It was stated that on numerous occasions this issue has been rejected yet again and again the issue is raised in the parliament. BCI made it clear that unless the interest of Indian lawyers are protected or Indian law firms are allowed to practice in different countries, the Indian Bar would not allow any lawyer or firm to establish here.
