| UK Home Secretary Priti Patel approves Nirav Modi’s Extradition |
On Friday, UK home secretary Priti Patel approved the extradition of fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi in connection with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam case, the country's home office said.
Earlier in Feb, a London Court had ordered that Nirav Modi could be extradited as "he does have a case to answer before the Indian courts."
Currently, Nirav Modi has been lodged in a United Kingdom prison since his arrest in March 2019.
Once extradited to India, he will face charges of fraud, money laundering, alleged intimidation of witnesses & disappearance of evidence.

The diamond merchant is wanted in connection with the $2 billion (around Rs 14,000 crore) PNB scam case.
Nirav Modi now has fourteen days to challenge the order in the UK HC. Any appeal, if granted, will be heard at the administrative division of the HC in London.
In case extradited, Nirav Modi would be held at Barrack No 12 at the Arthur Road jail in Mumbai.
India is a designated Part 2 country by virtue of the Extradition Act 2003, which means it is the UK Cabinet Minister who has the authority to order a requested person's extradition after considering a number of further issues.
The home secretary's order rarely goes against the court's conclusions, as she has to consider only very narrow bars to extradition which did not apply in Nirav's case.

Nirav Modi had escaped from India on Jan 1, 2018. A non bailable arrest warrant was issued by the trial court against him followed by a red corner notice in June 2018 by Interpol.
He was arrested by the UK Police & his repeated applications for bail, were rejected by the Westminster Magistrates' Court & HC, London.
